Remove the shadow of the desktop icons on our Nokia N900

Remove the shadow of the desktop icons in our Nokia N900 is very simple. There are two different ways to do this, choose which you prefer ;-) -

Remove shadows N900 Remove the shadow of the desktop icons on our Nokia N900

We may remove the shadow simply deleting or changing the name of the following files, accessing OpenSSH mode:

/usr/share/themes/Actual_Theme/images/ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png
/usr/share/themes/Actual_Theme/images/ApplicationShortcutApplet.png

If we change the extension then we can restore returning to the extension .png.

From the N900 also we can do that, for that reason, accessing root mode, type:

$ Sudo gainroot
$ Cd/usr/share/themes/Actual_Theme/images/
$ Mv ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png.old
$ Mv ApplicationShortcutApplet.png ApplicationShortcutApplet.png.old

And then reboot the device ;-)

  1. This is cool!!! i hope there is no bad impact in any cause. i mean, it will not affect any programs?

  3. hey. I tried to type the second method, but I cannot do anything after sudo gainroot. it says — cannot cd to usr/share/themes/Actual_Theme/images/. I am typing the same way as it is written except using the “$” sign. Plz help me out and tell me are there any side effects of doing this ? and what if I have the Midnight Commander. Can I do this with MC ?

  4. what does actual_theme means

  5. KK, actual_themes = theme installed

  7. i agreed on 2nd method, it doesnt make anysense.

    maybe you can give us a comprehensive instructions specially in a linux beginner.

    when you type “sudo gainroot” it says:

    /home/user #

    when you followed instruction above details,

    it says:

    /bin/user # Cd/usr/share/themes/Actual_Theme/images/: not found.

    can you please confer as new clear instruction, i would appreciate your respond on this.

  8. Everything works fine. You should just change Actual_Theme to name of your current theme. One minus is that after it’s harder to understand if you have pressed the button or not. Like workaround I tried not to rename ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png and in that case everything is fine for me.

  9. Nice one! Thanks.

    For Linux beginners, the basic commands above mean:

    cd = change directory
    mv = move (here used to rename)

    Replace “Actual_Theme” in the path above with the name of your actual theme (called “default” in most cases…)

  10. …and to make it more convenient for typing:

    you may type: cd/u then press tab, so the system will autocomplete, if non-ambigous to cd /usr/ then add …/sh , type tab and you will get cd /usr/share/ and so on…

    Use ls to list the content of any directory.

  11. ok guys I got it. everything is just working fine. Just type exactly as given below but Remember 3 things

    1. there is a space between “cd” and “/”.

    2. replace “actual_theme” by either “alpha” for nokia nseries theme or “beta” for Digital life theme.

    3. Reboot necessary after performing below operations.

    4. cd and mv should be in lowercase where as the file names must be written as mentioned below:

    $ sudo gainroot
    /home/user # cd /usr/share/themes/Actual_Theme/images/
    mv ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png.old
    mv ApplicationShortcutApplet.png ApplicationShortcutApplet.png.old

  12. after i do this
    /home/user # cd /usr/share/themes/Actual_Theme/images/
    i got premission denied

  13. amir bhai I think u didn’t installed the rootsh properly or ur typing incorrectly. Can just tell the exact error what does it says like “cant cd” or something.

  14. KK, thanks, really thanks xD

    In the spanish version of this forum, NOTHING answer me. And you explain it perfectly. Thanks!

  15. I deleted the phone shortcut by mistake, how to restore it back?

  16. anyway to get this for widgets and bookmarks??

  17. Yeay! It worked! I hae no idea why it worked but it does!
    Why does changing a filename remove the shadow??? Doesnt make sense to me! But who am I to question why!!!
    Cheers Guys!

    KKel – really helpful, couldnt have done it without you.

  18. I’ve been trying over and over again the second method, but no succes! Same old message “no such file name”.
    I’am asking you for some assistance, 1st time opperating on linux.
    10x all!

  20. i dont understand what i should write instead of the Actual_theme… cuz when i type in my theme( digital_nature) and it doesnt work.. then when i try using alpha or beta instead it goes farther but after that it says : can not rename ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png… i dont understand xD Help please :D :D

  21. This is how I did it and worked for me

    To gain root access I donwload “Rootsh” from the application manager, then Open the terminal and type:

    $ sudo gainroot
    /home/user # cd /usr/share/themes/alpha/images/ (REMERMBER: there is a space between “cd” and “/”)

    mv ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png.old
    mv ApplicationShortcutApplet.png ApplicationShortcutApplet.png.old

  22. hi, i have a problem!
    when i tipe
    “cd /usr/share/themes/digital_nature/images/

    then i get the answer
    “/bin/sh: cd: cant cd to /usr/share/themes/digital_nature/images/

    what is my problem???

  23. Lutz
    Replace \digital_nature\ for “beta” (remove quotes) , should look like this.

    cd /usr/share/themes/beta/images/

    That will answer your question, then follow the next command lines on my previous post.
    Post your results.
    Good luck
    JCAB

  24. I used the openssh way, after installing it, it’s very easy

    Note the
    “..themes/Actual_Theme/images/…”
    is actually
    “..themes/Default (folder with arrow on it)/images/…”

    This is for the Nokia Default Themes

  25. Just a small detail to make things clearer
    The Nokia Nseries is ‘Alpha’ when you look in the folders, and ‘beta’ is the Digital nature, you will not see the ‘real names’, just alpha or beta, slightly confusing

  26. how do i restore it to the old state with shadows if i use xterminal?

  27. hello, first of all thanks to everybody. it worked fine for me with the standard themes. but now i have the iStyle black theme. if do every step like written, but it says:
    “/bin/sh: cd: cant cd to /usr/share/themes/istyle_black_theme/images/
